Book Review: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert – A Guide to Embracing Creativity and Living Fearlessly
If there’s one book that understands the art of creativity and the messiness that comes with it, it’s Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. Known for her life-changing memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Gilbert brings us into the world of creativity, but not in the typical “how-to” way. Instead, Big Magic is an invitation to explore the deeper, sometimes mystical side of creativity—a side that’s as much about embracing fear and uncertainty as it is about making art.
Gilbert breaks creativity down into six parts: Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust, and Divinity. She speaks to each with honesty and a refreshing lack of pretension, encouraging readers to approach creativity without pressure or perfectionism. One of my favorite parts? Her philosophy that creativity isn’t always about being original; sometimes it’s about following curiosity and letting it lead you, even if that means revisiting ideas that have already been done. Gilbert reminds us that we don’t have to wait for the “perfect” time or the ultimate stroke of genius to start creating—we just have to start.
Big Magic feels less like a book and more like a conversation with a friend who gives you permission to be curious, vulnerable, and, most importantly, unapologetically creative. It’s an ode to the simple act of making something because it feels good, because it’s part of what makes life worth living. If you’re someone who feels stifled by fear, perfectionism, or self-doubt, this book is a must-read. Big Magic will have you rethinking your relationship with creativity, reminding you that there’s a world of inspiration waiting if you’re brave enough to grab it.
Rating: 4.5/5 – Big Magic is a beautifully written, liberating guide for anyone who’s ever felt the call to create.Xoxo,
A.D
